National Category Manager

David is our National Category Manager for NHS Supply Chain: Orthopaedics, Trauma and Spine, and Ophthalmology.

He began his career in procurement roles in manufacturing, construction and civil engineering before joining the NHS in 2007, working at the Healthcare Purchasing Consortium (HPC).

While at HPC David oversaw contracts for a range of categories on behalf of the West Midlands Procurement Hub.  

He was also responsible for several collaborative procurement exercises taking to market product categories including cardiology, enteral feeds, procedure packs and insulin infusion pumps. Throughout this period, he was directly responsible for managing orthopaedics, renewing framework provisions and supporting trusts with numerous standardisation and rationalisation initiatives before joining CPP in 2019 as the National Category Manager.

The orthopaedic and ophthalmology categories that CPP manage cover a combined spend of around £500m per annum across the NHS. They are complex by nature and the resulting trust agreements require significant clinical, departmental and supplier engagement from the outset.  David recognises that only through working closely with local procurement teams is it possible to manage the 3,500 or so bespoke contracts and catalogues currently in place. 

David has been a member of the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply since 2002.
